In the tension of true grace, Anthony Richard joined his family through the gift of adoption.

The months had held heartache, but what they entered into on this day was what they had known in their hearts for what had seemed like forever.

Issued by a ruling, it was a gift of grace and still a dichotomy of loss and celebration, grief and truest joy, separation and chosen belonging. This is adoption.

The questions came fast, one after another, and steadily they answered. Yes, they knew him. Yes, they chose him. Yes, he would be theirs for always. Their oaths were solemn, their eyes full of salt water and hope. There was a moment of silence while papers were shuffled, final signatures reviewed, the tension of prayers and tears and longing and love hung motionless in time.

And then, this rainbow promise named Anthony Richard was their son.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us…” Ephesians 1:5
