"I've been teaching him how to kick…" He smiled proudly up at a me then back down, touching nose to nose. I smiled back, ready to giggle along with him, then realizing he was serious in his care for the little one whose tender scalp he gently rounded small fingers around.
"It's true," Momma murmured sweetly, touching locks and brushing bangs. "He is the best big brother."
You may recognize Morgan from this post, but I hadn't seen anything like it, big brother Shaw climbing up next to us, at our side, shoulder to shoulder to admire with wonder the little guy who would forever be his shadow. He whispered secrets to him, calming him as newborn eyes opened and blinked and searched with innocence, struggling to focus but still finding him. Their sweet sincerity carried us that afternoon, telling stories of months, years waited, prayers answered, and a brotherhood born.
And then, when daddy came home, their family was complete. Cozy together didn't mean silence, perfect for each other didn't mean calm - in fact, it was quite the opposite. And yet, they fit together in a way that surpassed newborn sleep deprivation, overwhelming work demands, the unknown of life with children. It was beautiful, and so, so right. This sweetness made more sense to me when I read an update Dan posted almost a month ago, just days before his second son arrived.
"What was expected to be an extended Christmas vacation, turned into a 7 month break from work. While the stress added some gray hairs, I realize now what a gift it was. 7 months to spend with my wife and son. I experienced more life in the last seven months than I have in years. I've learned to really appreciate the everyday things of life- mowing the lawn with my son, family bike rides, picking my son up from school and hanging at the pool all summer with family. I will return to work on Monday with a new perspective. I think the motto of loving what you do can sometimes be unrealistic, because bills and mortgages don't wait for you to follow your dream. I realize now It's not about my dream, it's about the kind of life I want to give my family. Don't forget why you work and who you work for. Don't take any time spent with family for granted.
Because if I didn't have to work I know exactly what I would do. 7 months have passed, and In the next few days I hope to welcome my second son to the world. In that same time I've also lost an uncle, an aunt, and a long time friend. I plan on teaching my kids everything I learned from them- Never stop learning, always take one for the road, and to simply live like Ben"
