We are the mothers. A tribute to the women raising tomorrow's greatness.
We are the mothers.
We’re the ones who have dreamed and planned and hoped and lost and wept and waited and all together ached with desire.
We’re the one who haven’t known how it could ever happen, how we’d ever be healthy enough, secure enough, ready enough, worthy enough, ever enough.
And, still, in grace we are gifted this magnificent gift. Motherhood.
And, as mothers, as cells are knit and explosion of life is tinier than the eye can see, our hearts are fuller still.
And whether planned or prepared,
partnered with or left alone,
whether it's our bodies or our hearts,
we are ravished by growth and pain and for the rest of existense are no longer our own.
Because we are mothers.
We’re the ones who’ve reached for them across bath waters, IV lines and hospital gowns.
We’ve reached for them across state lines and continents,
marriage certificates and dotted lines, all to hold them flesh against breast
and know they’re ours.
Because we’re the glue.
We’re the providers, the nurturers, the quiet refuge.
We are the storming defender, the tender comfort, the fierce warrior.
We can’t keep our eyes open and rise with the dawn.
We pour coffee and wine and over books and stovetops and bills.
We scratch through enrollment forms and homework and garden beds and spreadsheets.
We learn to nurse from our breast and how to kiss scraped knees and mend holed socks and broken hearts and through it all,
to live all over again.
We turn leaf veins into treasure maps and cotton ball clouds into galloping unicorns and thunderstorms into concert music.
We make beds and bread and rent and memories and legacy.
And through black days, those oh so bleak terrible days, like bug zappers again and again,
we keep barely above waves of exhaustion and self-doubt
and we press on.
Because we choose for these hard, grueling, beautiful days to still shine brighter than all the brightest days before them.
And somehow by this lamp light of one day at a time,
through the orbit of outpouring and joy,
we find ourselves still putting one step forward one at a time,
and we choose them.
Because we are mothers
raising the ones who will take only the patience and gentleness and vision
have given them
forward into the universe
for generations to come.
It is we,
who are not just raising our children,
but the greatness of tomorrow.
